CiC’s Advocacy Committee Updates and What’s New!

by

The Choices in Childbirth advocacy crew is hard at work formulating a “Snapshot” of women’s childbirth options in New York City in 2012.  The Snapshot will show the level of access families have to a wide variety of birth options, everything from elective cesarean section to water birth at home.  We feel that this report will be a useful tool for consumers as they navigate the maternity care system.  We suspect that it will also highlight the extreme limitations families face when making childbirth choices in New York City.  We hope that it will open and encourage a dialogue between consumers, policy makers, health providers and facility administrators.

Anyone interested in getting involved with CiC’s advocacy work and this report specifically, please email info@choicesinchildbirth.org.

The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition
$24.99 for the full digital dvd package
Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein’s documentary, The Business of Being Born, has been made into a 30-minute university classroom version! It reaches out to young adults BEFORE they confront their own birth decisions – challenging the prevailing assumptions about birth providers and current obstetrical management trends. The dvd is accompanied by a toolkit designed by Gene DeClerq that aims to facilitate meaningful conversation in the classroom. While devised with an initial focus on undergraduate classes in Sociology, Anthropology, Women’s Studies, and Public Health, The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition could be used for a myriad of university disciplines. Click here to learn more about this program.

This is an extremely important movement/cause. I hope that as it expands that we will see these same type offerings from CiC on the west coast. I am ready to jump in from here in CA. Any chance of expanding to this coast?. I would love to hear the feedback you get from the various sessions you have coming up in the next few months from the NY area. I find that movement and motion is the only way we will make more families aware of their birth options; to help curb the downturn with regards to perinatal care today in the US. Kudos to all involved.
